I'm confused, I thought that the price to get in was the recommended donation. Are you/they saying that I now HAVE to purchase a ticket in order to enter the street fair? Will I not be allowed in if I don't pay the recommended DONATION? I'm sorry but it really burns me when people are pressured to make a dontation. It really amounts to charging a fee but calling it a donation for a NPO so they don't have the $ taxed in the same way.

F that. There is no way I am paying for the street fair. They get more and more agressive about it every year, but when it comes down to it they can't stop anyone from just walking in. They charge enough to the people renting booths. Last year it was rumored to be a "mandatory donation" also, but I think us locals should stand firm on not paying it. And seriously, for most of us who go all three days, $12-$15 is way too much.

If it is manadatory then it IS NOT a dontation IT IS AN ENTRANCE FEE. I don't know what legal loophole it is that allows people to require a donation for entry.

Also, like I said in the thread from last year... so does this mean that if I need to go to the Radio Shack I have to pay the entrance fee or go to a different Radio Shack? If I want to go eat at Good Cafe or Eat Well do I have to pay the entrace fee or go to a different restaurant? Or the pet grooming place or the hair place or the or the or the......

Don't get me wrong.... I'm not opposed to the cause the money is going toward... I am opposed to being pressured/forced to make a donation. How do you know there isn't other charitable contributions I make to other causes that are more dear to my heart than yours.

I am planning on going this year at least one day. And I am NOT going to pay out of principle more than anything else.

I'm sorry about the soapbox but this really really burns me.

I just emailed them to figure it out. Last year they gave me shit for not paying and i said donations are not required to get in it is plus if people pay. I just wanted to go to a local business I go to all the time. They even threatened to get security if I didnt pay. Luckily i was with a friend who is just as an aggressive lawyer. LOL they let us in.

So here was their response I had to ask them twice if its a donation and this year it is not and $15 is Robbery.
I think i will skip it this year as I'm sure most people will. I should do a graffiti camapian and spread the word. It would suck if you showed up and then didnt have the money. : )

            email:

            you have to pay.
            thanks

Is this an entrance fee or a donation? Every year it gets more expensive and the people at the door are more aggressive. I would like to go all days but not if its 15 dollars everyday. What is exactly the cost?

Seriously - this sucks. If you want to go both days it would be $24-30?!?! Also - I dont know if I'm the only one who thinks the line-up gets worse every year? It used to be cool but I agree - Im not going this year. I reluctantly went last year and wasnt into it. Its kinda sad whats happened with this.

I totally agree and I'd love to join Modemlooper in making a graffiti or asking some of the stores to put signs. The line up's bad as well so at the end I don't know if this is worth it.

I'd like to start up a grass roots neighborhood movement to cut Sunset Junction back down to size. It's too big, too expensive, and most of all -- a royal pain for the people who actually have to live around here.

            Sat, August 19, 2006 - 8:37 AM
Ok, I haven't been in a long time... but I remember it being about the same size in physical space 20 years ago as it is now. It started about where the 99cents store is and went just past where the oil change place is (back then it was the Blue Nun). At that end was a few kid's things like a bounce thing and I think I remember at least one year pony rides, and a face painter and so on.

I don't remember there being a fee to get in and I can't ask my dad because he passed away many years back. But I remember the barricades being up for safety reasons but there weren't people "manning" them as I recall. I think I remember there being lite security at the stages and a security presence around but not such that it was too much.

I don't know how the merchants are putting up with people being required to pay to get in. I think it would take away from their business. It is a street fair not an amusement park, not a renissaunce (sp?) faire or a re-enactment.

I realize that the overhead costs are far more than most people are aware of.... The insurance must be obscenely expensive. But this is out of control.

I'd like to mention also, (I don't know all the details but) there is this really great street fair in San Francisco on Folsom Street that almost "required donation to enter" 'd themselves out of existence.

I do not want our street fair to go away but yes I think the entrance fee should be protested.

Print flyers informing patrons of their rights not to pay and include snippets from the LA Weekly article.

                Post these all over Silverlake.

                Watch the chaos.

Oh i am sooooooo posting signs now! I wasnt even gonna go this year just because! that article is last year though they might have got permits. I am gonna go to their office and ask to see the permits.
  • I SENT THE FOLLOWING EMAIL to Eric Garcetti's office re: SunJun charges this year.

    Dear Mr. Garcetti:

I learned today that the Sunset Junction organizers were given a permit
that allowed them to REQUIRE payment for entrance. I am deeply disturbed
    by this.

Since the Junction festival began, the entry fee has been a donation.
The requested donation has risen and risen and risen over the years, but
the donation policy remained in place (even though the security folks
tried to make it seem participants HAD to pay).

Sunset Junction is my very favorite weekend of the year. But not if I
have to pay $15 PER DAY to celebrate my own neighborhood. And especially
if the Junction organizers NEVER have to open their books for auditing
(which, by the way, they have never done).

I suggest your office check out the receipts this year...I bet
attendance is WAY down. And next year, maybe you could remember that
DONATIONS are what made the Junction successful, before you agree to a
    permit that requires payment.

    I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING RESPONSE:

Thank you for contacting our Office regarding your concerns about the
2006 Sunset Junction Street Fair. Here are some answers to the
    concerns:

Based on the concerns that were brought to our attention, over the past
couple of months our office has been working closely with the Silver
Lake Neighborhood Council and the Sunset Junction organizers to address
the concerns you mentioned and others from folks in the community.

The City Attorney's Office ruled that there are no ordinances
prohibiting them from charging admission fees to events. The Sunset
Junction organizers will charge festival attendees a fee, and proceeds
of the street fair will go to Sunset Junction's community youth
programs. While they are charging an admission fee, the organizers have
said that "no one will be turned away due to lack of funds."
Michael McKinley of Sunset Junction can tell you more about their
programs; he can be reached at (323) 661-7771.

The Sunset Junction organizers agreed to give free entry wristbands to
local residents who live 1 block North and 1 block South of Sunset Blvd.
along the stretch where the fair is located. Residents can pick up the
wristband (limit 2 per household) from Tsunami Cafe at 4019 Sunset Blvd.
    with proof of residence.

    Joseph Bernardo, Field Deputy
Office of Council President Eric Garcetti
Los Angeles City Council District 13
    5500 Hollywood Blvd. 4th Floor

    Office: (323) 957-4500
    Fax: (323) 957-6841
    www.cd13.com

After receiving this response, I called Michael McKinley about the free wristbands. He proceeded to give me a whole bunch of attitude, at one point asking me what part of what he was saying did I not understand. He then hung up on me.

When I went to Tsunami to get my wristbands, the "barristas" tried to tell me I lived too far north to get in for free. I think they recognized my willingness to argue that point and gave in. I am now in possession of my entry bracelets.

I am also about to send another email to Mr. Garcetti's office re: this behavior. I recommend that, if you have issues with the cost and the rules, you contact his office as well at garcetti@council.lacity.org
    • Similiar situation, I used to live in northern California and when the park service started charging admission to Muir Woods, which was essentially my back yard, I told them, "to get stuffed!" Perhaps I'm being a bit militant about this but now that I reside in Silver Lake I am highly offended that a celebration of the neighborhood I live in is being held on what is "PUBLIC PROPERTY," and they are going to try and charge me admission. I'm planning on attending and when told I have to pay to walk down the PUBLIC street I'm going to tell them, "to get stuffed!" Just my two cents worth.
      • This is so ridiculous. In prior years when McKinley was forced to make public the books on the Fest, he did everything in his power to make is as tortuous as possible. His ego has gotten the best of him.

As to Garcetti, isn't there a state law that says that you cannot charge an admission fee to an event on a public street? Or did that just magically disappear this year?

I think what really got my blood boiling this year was hearing there was going to be a VIP lounge at Cliff's Restaurant for the C-list celebrities who show up. What next? Gift bags for the celebrities?

I hate to say it, but I would rather go to the OC Fair. At least admission there is only $8 and it's not on a public street.
    • So, on top of the $15, Silverlake pays in so many other ways as well. The entire neighborhood (not just 1 block north/south) is affected. Parking will be non-existant, streets will be blocked, traffic will suck, people will be blocking our driveways, there will be drunks roaming the streets, and on top of that, a very loud rock concert.

Plus, the money gained by the fair goes unaccounted.

This has gotten way out of hand. It was OK when it was a street fair.

In addition to complaining now, be sure to write Garcetti the day after the fair and complain about the aftermath.
      • Ok, I'm putting my 2 cents in again... boy I've posted here a lot.

About a year ago I had an issue that required I get Garcetti's office involved. I did a whole lot of trying to figure it out on my own first. Once I got Garcetti's office involved, my issue got resolved, however, it took about 5 months. And the first time I called and gave them my story, they listened and then never got back to me. I suspect a lot of people call them just to vent so only one call gets you nowhere. But persistence on my part got them going. After I called them the 3rd time they started really working on my issue.

Ok, my point is CALL CALL CALL CALL and bug and pester them because it they need to know that we the residents feel this is wrong.
        • So they DO have a permit! Guess I wont be going. Since they do have a permit they are not required to give any money to a non profit.
Oh I love the OC fair usually go every year. I dont even mind paying to get in but 15 for each day is just stupid. should be 15 for the weekend get a band use it all week end. I would prolly spen the rest of the money on food and shit. but not now. I should find out who the vendors are and tell them i would have supported them but the admission was too high.

i have no problem spending the money if it were for the kids of silver lake/echo park/los feliz. but i definitely have a problem with being told i'm supposed to donate (especially since, as a teacher, i've pour hundreds of my own money into my classroom for the kids), and never being sure exactly where the money goes.

I went - didn't pay either day, didn't get hassled, no one was turned away. All it took was a smile, a kind word, and I was in. The festival was amazing - as it is every year - I was really thankful for going - I discovered Hank Williams the 3rd and will never be the same.

I went. If I knew I didn't have to pay I would have played it off as I was some broke ass. Other than that it was a lot of fun. The Eels were pretty cool though they didn't play "Novacain" and some other songs we like. It's been since high school since I've listened to them. The Beer Garden and Margarita booth rocked!

        Wed, August 30, 2006 - 12:26 PM
I went on Sunday evening using a friend's wristband, and I had a GREAT time! I would have paid $15 if I needed to. It also seemed like there was better music than the past few years. Hank Williams III took me by surprise. And during my re-entries at different gates sometimes I was asked to show my wristband, and other times I could just walk in w/o anyone even paying attention to me. Shrug.

If it's $15 bucks again next year I will probably just go for one day.

i went and paid the 15 AND paid 10 for the shuttle parking because i wanted to see a band and i was driving around for 30mins. and gave in. i tried to see it from the perspective of all the bands i was going to see and how much i usually spend to see one band so that's how i had to look at it despite the fact that i got in for free before(biting tounge). i did enjoy myself immensely the fair was great. i did notice the 4100 didn't have the line around the block like last year but they were still very crowded. will i pay again. probably.

In regards to whether the entrance fee is mandatory, I did a little research. First I called the City Attorney's office where I spoke with an attorney concerning the matter and he told me it would take two hours to research it and that he didn't have time. He then recommended that I call the Police Commision which I did. The investigator at the Police Commission said that this is something that they do not enforce and this is not a matter that the police would get involved in. He recommended that I call the Office of Finance to get a definitive answer. I spoke to a woman at the Office of Finance and she told me she didn't know anything concerning this and she recommended I call the City Attorney's office.
It seems as the only people who say that the fee is mandatory are the people that are running the fair and the Police Commission tells me that they will not be enforcing this.
Personally, I would tell the people at the gate that you are not paying and that if they would like, feel free to alert the nearest police officer. From what I was told by the Police Commission, this is not something they will be enforcing
    • Re: $12-$15 for sunset junction

      Fri, August 17, 2007 - 11:00 PM
Last year the fee was "mandatory" as well. We (the husband and I- who live by the Hyperion gate) witnessed two types of people trying to get in for free: the law-abiding who tried to reason with the gate people, claming poverty/low income or just needing to cross the street to get to the store, work and such. These people were always turned away (and for the ones trying to get across the street, force to walk up to a mile out of their way to do their business)
The second group just walked on by. Some with a word or to as to why they would not be paying (some of the words in languages the gate people were unable to understand). Other just walked on in. (note: many of our community members in the Sunset Junction Community are from war ravaged Central America countries, they have had to learn how to avoid soldiers trained and funded by the USA or the USSR. And may have had to avoid INS/ICE to cross into our lovely country; they are not about to let a little kid sitting inside a change link gate keep them from crossing a street) No one did a thing, no cops were called, no security came running.
  • Re: $12-$15 for sunset junction

It is no longer a donation and they will have to pay the $28,000 fee for a licence (and presumably taxes as well). In the past they were threatened by the LAPD with having their licence revoked for not dispalying signs that it was a suggested donation. This will resolve THAT issue but the fair no longer has anything to do with its original purpose which was to ease tensions between locals who had inhabited the area for some time and gay men who were moving in and changing the face of the nighbourhood. At that time, you seldom saw ANYONE strolling on the streets because the area was regarded as being so dangerous and crime prone. It is hard to believe just how much the social/cultural scene has changed here.

well good for them that they finally have to pay the 28 grand! this is the first year i have ever paid do to security at the gate who would not let you in. i think 15 is too much for a street fair though. I am going to the folsom in SF and it fucking free!
